"Know the Past, Know the Present" is the SVSU History Department's platform to promote the value of history as an academic discipline. Moreover, the blog serves as host site for the department's podcast, "Argument Without End." The SVSU History Department is one of the most dynamic academic departments at the university. Its faculty members are world-class historians, scholars, and instructors who offer courses in World, American, and European History that address an array of historical themes (e.g. race, gender, class, religion, politics, international relations, medicine, public history etc.). While these courses meet the educational needs of SVSU's history majors and education majors (with a History focus), those at 100 and 200 levels also fulfill many of the university's general education requirements for graduation with a bachelor's degree. Moreover, many of the department's courses count toward minors, including Public History, Black Studies, Religious Studies, International Studies, and Philosophy. With members who have received prestigious teaching awards, the history faculty offer innovative instruction that expands students' understanding of the past and its links to the present, as well as develops and refines undergraduates' critical, analytical, and communication skills, all of which has application in many fields and careers outside the realm of the discipline of History. Combined, analytical thinking and knowing the past prove crucial to engaging also in the civic responsibilities asked of all members of the United States and the international community. Widely published, the history faculty embody the ideal of the "scholar-teacher" that is the foundation of university education, with their individual research informing their teaching and vice versa. In short, SVSU students enjoy top-notch instruction from the History Department that is second to none, preparing them for their future careers and active participation in the global world we all inhabit today.
